James C. Sobecki, PhD James C. Sobecki, of Washington, Indiana, died September 28, 2013, after a brief illness. He was born March 16, 1932 to Connie and Jeanette (Pleszewski) Sobecki in Dunkirk, New York. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Gerald Sobecki and sister, JoAnn Smyers. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Arlene (Jozwiak) Sobecki, brother Ron Sobecki New York and sister Margaret Workoff of New York; children Duane (Jennie) Sobecki of Fishers, Dean (Brenda) Sobecki of Washington, Dawn Fritschle of Washington, and Daniel Sobecki of Washington; and his grandchildren, Taylor and Tanner Fritschle, Allison and Gregory Sobecki, Gregory Bohnert, and Katie Daily. Jim was a 1949 graduate of Dunkirk High School in Dunkirk, New York. A pipe fitter by trade, he was a decorated Army combat veteran of the Korean War. He married Arlene on May 2nd 1953. Jim received a BS from Fredonia State University; an MA from Loyola University in Chicago; an EdS from Southern Illinois University; and a PhD from the University of Michigan. was the superintendent of schools on Mc Leansboro, Illinois; Washington, Indiana; Sesser, Illinois; and Greene County, Indiana. After retirement Jim served as president of the Washington Housing Authority. Jim was known for innovation in educational programming and a deep and continuing interest in his students. His professional career as well as his volunteer work benefited greatly from his business acumen. Jim was an Avid outdoorsman and a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Washington, Indiana. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with father James Koressel as celebrant. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8:30 PM on Wednesday at Our Lady of Hope Church, with an exchange of remembrances with friends and family at 6:30. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Piorist School Highway 80 Box 870 in Martin, Kentucky 41649, NJROTC Program at Washington High School 608 east Walnut Washington, Indiana 47501, or your favorite public or private elementary or secondary school.
