John W. "Bill" Vonderschmitt, age 84, of Washington, passed away Saturday at 10:25 pm at Washington Nursing Center. He was born August 14, 1930 in Washington to Margaret (Corning) and Frank Vonderschmitt. He graduated from Washington High School. Bill retired as president from First Federal Savings Bank after 56 years of service. At the time of his death, he was still serving on the board of directors. He was a Korean War Army Veteran. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and a 50 year member of the American Legion. He was a Ham radio operator for over 50 years, K9MAJ was his handle. He also enjoyed tracking and recording the weather. He is survived by wife, Mary Jo (Sum) Vonderschmitt who he married June 9, 1956, a son, Mark (Deborah) Vonderschmitt from Louisville, Kentucky and daughter, Carol (Richard) Oren from Grandville, Michigan, six grandchildren; Joseph Oren, Daniel Oren, Benjamin Vonderschmitt, Kendrick Vonderschmitt, Kaitlin (Tyler) Harris, and Timothy (Kayla) Vonderschmitt. ill be celebrated Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, Montgomery. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery, Washington, with full military rites by the Washington American Legion and VFW. Visitation will be Friday from 4 - 8 pm with 3:30 wake service at Ed Lee Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John Cemetery, 101 N. Meridian Street, Washington, IN 47501 or St. Vincent DePaul Society, 815 E. Main St., Washington, IN 47501.
